NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The NYPD has apprehended a man who on Monday allegedly attempted to rape a woman in front of a Washington Heights church, police said.

Around 11:20 p.m. on Monday, in front of St. Rose of Lima's Church on West 165th Street, the man ran up to a 23-year-old woman from behind. The man, according to a police news release, "wrapped his arms around her and put his hand over her mouth. The individual dragged the victim under a nearby awning and told her not to scream or he would stab her. The male shoved the victim against a wall, pulled her pants down and tried to rape her. When he was unable to rape the victim, the individual forced her to perform oral sex on him."

The victim was removed to an area hospital for evaluation.
