NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New York City’s illegal fireworks task force has arrested nearly 200 people since it launched near the end of June, according to a report.

Mayor Bill de Blasio on June 23 announced the formation of a task force aimed at cracking down on illegal fireworks.

Since June 23, the task force — which comprises members of the NYPD Intelligence Bureau, the FDNY and the Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation — has arrested 195 people, NBC New York reported

“Illegal fireworks are both dangerous and a public nuisance,” de Blasio said in a statement on June 23. “We’re cracking down on this activity at the source to ensure the safety of all New Yorkers and the ability of our neighbors to get some sleep."

In his own statement at the time, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said illegal firework use had “skyrocketed” for “any number of reasons.”

“The NYPD will continue to work closely with our city partners to address this dangerous issue,” he said.
