NYC food carts, trucks to get letter grades

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Now you can feel better about eating street meat.

Letter grades are coming to city food carts, city health officials announced Friday.

Carts and trucks will now receive A, B and C food-safety grades similar to those given to restaurants in the five boroughs. Their scores will be displayed on newly-designed decals.

Officials say they'll also attach a location device to track each cart when they're due for an inspection.

Some of the vendors have said they support the new grading process and hope it'll challenge the old stereotype about food carts having an issue with cleanliness.

It's expected to take about two years for all the trucks and carts to be graded.

It will likely take about two years for all 5,500 authorized trucks and carts to be graded, NY1 reported.
