City Council Considering Grading School Cafeterias

The city's restaurants get letter grades -- so why not school cafeterias?

That's the idea behind a new bill being considered in the city council.

It comes in response to recent health department data showing that nearly half of school cafeterias had at least one serious health code violation last year.

Bronx councilman Rafael Salamanca is co-sponsoring the bill with Staten Island councilman Joe Borelli.

"Absolutely disgusting that evidence of mice, rats & flies were found in nearly half of city school cafeterias," Salamanca tweeted.

And Borelli charged in a tweet, "We were shocked to learn back in January that the DOE tries to sweep violations under the tile."
