NYC bodega owners want permission to sell legal weed

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) When and if recreational marijuana is legalized in New York, bodega owners want their fair share of the profits.

Fernando Mateo of United Bodegas of America spoke in Mott Haven on behalf of the bodega owners’ cause, saying, “All this money should not go to white-owned businesses, they should not go to corporate America, they should be shared with the underdogs.”

Mateo says bodega owners’ experience selling beer, cigarettes and lottery tickets qualifies them to sell marijuana.

"It's not heroin. It's not cocaine. It's not a drug that's going to kill anyone," Mateo said.

Bodega owners plan on reaching out to Gov. Cuomo and state lawmakers to plead their case.
