Northern Boulevard getting makeover in face of rising pedestrian death toll

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- First Queens Boulevard, now Northern Boulevard is getting a makeover following a spate of pedestrian accidents in recent years -- more than a dozen of which have been fatal.

Some call it the new 'boulevard of death' and many who cross Northern Boulevard have a horror story.

"It's a dangerous intersection, my husband he got hit by a car," one woman told 1010 WINS' Samantha Liebman.

It wasn't serious, but for others it has been -- four people have been killed this year.

Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg said the city has made many changes over the past four years.

"Pedestrian islands, signal re-timing, improved crosswalks, turn bans, leading pedestrian intervals, but obviously we need to do more work on this terrible street," she said.

Workshops begin next week to begin a comprehensive redesign of 4.5 miles of western Northern Boulevard. In the meantime street teams will speak to stopped drivers about safety, and the NYPD will step up enforcement.
