Nixon: Legal Pot Would Boost Revenue, Create Jobs, Ease Social Justice Problem

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Nixon's the one if you want legalized recreational marijuana in New York state -- that's Cynthia Nixon.

She says it would raise tax revenue and create agricultural jobs, but most importantly she said it would address a social justice problem.

"We have to stop putting people of color in jail for something that white people do with impunity. Eighty percent of the New Yorkers who are arrested for marijuana are black or Latino despite the fact that whites and people of color use marijuana at roughly the same rates," she said.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who will face Nixon in the democratic primary, said he'd consider legalizing marijuana, but it's not entirely up to him.

"A lot of democrats support it, a lot of republicans oppose it. As you know in the legislature we have republicans and democrats. As you know I'm trying to de-politicize the issue," he said.

Cuomo said there is pressure on New York to act since Vermont and Massachusetts have already done so, and New Jersey is considering it.
