April 29, 2018 - 12:35 pm

MAMARONECK, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- An investigation was under way Sunday after a woman was shot and wounded by police when she allegedly attacked officers in Mamaroneck.

Around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, police were called to a residence on Chestnut Avenue in Mamaroneck, and found a 2 1/2-year-old girl in need of medical aid.

The officers located the child and started life-saving members as they waited for an ambulance. They also searched the home and found the 28-year-old woman, police said.

“The female was given numerous verbal commands by the officers to show her hands,” said Mamaroneck police Sgt. Sandra DiRuzza. “The female then attacked the officers with a knife, injuring two of them.”

The officers fired their Tasers, which did not stop the woman, police said. The woman was then shot and wounded by the officers, police said.

The child was later pronounced dead at an area hospital, police said. An autopsy will determine the cause of her death.

The woman, who was the toddler’s mother, remained hospitalized and was expected to recover, police said.

The officers are also expected to recover.
