NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A woman was found unconscious at the bottom of an outdoor stairwell in Queens Monday morning, and police said she had been sexually assaulted and severely beaten in what they're calling a random attack.

Police were called at 8:33 a.m. for a possible sexual assault near 72nd Road and Kissena Boulevard in Kew Gardens Hills, the NYPD said.

They found the 52-year-old woman was found at the bottom of the exterior stairwell with trauma to her face and body, police said.

The woman was taken to an area hospital where she was reported in critical, but stable, condition.

Area residents such as Edwin told 1010 WINS’ Roger Stern that such attacks are totally out of character for the neighborhood.

“It just normally doesn’t happen,” he said. “My mother lives right there on 147th Street, so I’m a little concerned.”

Police blocked off 72nd Road for hours looking for clues.

There was no description of a suspect and the investigation continued Monday afternoon.
