HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Snapping turtles might move slower than molasses, but they’ve got jaws of steel – and they can snap quicker than “right now.”

A police officer in Hamilton Township used a shield to protect himself as he helped a snapping turtle cross the road.

In a video posted to the police department Facebook page, you can see the critter lunging and snapping at the shield several times.

One commenter was wondering, “Is the turtle trying out for a new ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ movie? Another one said, ‘No, if he keeps that up, he’s trying out for a nice warm spot inside a pot of turtle soup.”

The animal was not harmed.
