Sharpton Meets With Family Of Man Shot, Killed By Police In Crown Heights

April 08, 2018 - 1:51 pm

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The Rev. Al Sharpton and other leaders of the National Action Network met Sunday with the family of a man who was shot and killed by police in Crown Heights, Brooklyn last week.

As 1010 WINS’ Al Jones reported, police defend last week’s shooting of Saheed Vassell, 34, saying he was holding a silver pipe as if he were going to fire a gun when officers killed him.

But it has raised questions among some because Vassell was black.

Sharpton criticized the NYPD for showing Vassell running around Crown Heights on Wednesday pointing a silver pipe resembling a gun at members of the public.

“What is troubling about this shooting is that he’s now being tried unfairly in the media,” Sharpton said.

But the meeting between Sharpton and Vassell’s parents came on the same day the New York Daily News published an interview with an African-American witness, who said, “This dude gave every probable cause to shoot him.”

Police video showed Vassell, who was bipolar, pointing his silver pipe at seven people.

Sharpton said there is no way to judge the handling of the situation by police until video of the shooting is released.

Angry Crown Heights residents have rallied in protest against the shooting in the days since it happened this past Wednesday.

The New York state Attorney General’s office is investigating.
