Prosecutors Upgrade Charges In L.I. Crash That Left 5 Dead

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- Prosecutors on Thursday upgraded charges for a man accused in a crash that left five people dead on Long Island on Valentine’s Day.

“Essentially what we have here is a Valentine’s Day massacre,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini.

Sini said Jamel Turner, 23, had bragged to friends that if police tried to stop him, he would lead them on a chase – and his own rap sheet said he had done it before.

The suspected gang member and crack dealer was allegedly going 154 mph in the stolen Camaro that slammed into a Mazda in Ridge, killing everyone inside.

“Those four individuals burnt to death,” Sini said.

Turner’s passenger and dog were also killed.

He is now facing five counts of depraved indifference murder, which his lawyer, Donald Mates, has vowed to fight.

“It’s an accident,” Mates said. “There was no murder here.”
