NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A grandmother was attacked and had her ear ripped off by a pit bull while protecting her grandkids in the Bronx Wednesday.

As 1010 WINS’ Al Jones reported, the woman’s grandchildren were playing in the courtyard of the Eastchester Houses development when the pit bull, which was off its leash, came racing at them. The 57-year-old woman tried to stop the dog, and witness Craig Agosto said she was mauled.

“Yes it was – missing ear on her face, bite marks on her arm; you know, her upper arm and her hands, everywhere,” Agosto said.

The woman was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi. The dog was captured and taken to Animal Care and Control, and its handler was taken into custody.

“Everybody – they need to respect that leash law, you know? Have your dog on a leash at all times,” Agosto said.

He said a housing complex is not the place for a pit bull, and he wishes the New York City Housing Authority would enforce its own rules.
