NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Mothers are being celebrated for their own special day this Mother’s Day – but how did it all start?

As Steve Kastenbaum reported, it is not uncommon to hear people say that this is a “fake holiday,” made up by greeting card companies.

But the origins of Mother’s Day date back before the Civil War, when a group in West Virginia organized Mother’s Day workgroups in an attempt to lower infant mortality rates.

In the early 1900s, activist Anna Jarvis began pushing for a national holiday to recognize the hard work of mothers across America.

She went on a public awareness campaign, successfully getting states to create their own Mother’s Day holidays.

The momentum grew to the point where President Woodrow Wilson officially declared Mothers’ Day a national holiday in 1914.
