NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Residents are on edge in Bergen County after a stranger allegedly followed a girl into her driveway over the weekend.

The girl was out walking her dog at around 9 p.m. Saturday on Hopkins Street in Hillsdale, when police say she noticed a car stop near the intersection of Hopkins Street and Stever Ave, do a U-turn and then drive toward her.

The girl then ran toward her house but the man followed her and pulled into the driveway. The man then got out of the car, walked to the side door of the house and was confronted by the girl's mother, police said. He then went back to his car and sped off.

The family didn't want to talk, but a neighbor spoke  to 1010 WINS' reporter Glenn Schuck. "I am converned because I walk my dog at night and there are children in the neighborhood. It's scary to think people are patrolling our neighborhood," the neighbor said.

Hillsdale police are looking at surveillance cameras from homes in the neighborhood and are asking anyone who lives in the area who may have information in the case to call the Hillsdale Police Department Detective Bureau at 201-664-4200.

Police are patrolling the neighborhood and nearby schools as a precaution.
