NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Three former New York State Department of Corrections employees have been charged with having sexual or romantic relationships with inmates.

As 1010 WINS’ Sonia Rincon reported, a cellphone illegally in possession of a female inmate at the Taconic Correctional Facility women’s prison in Bedford Hills launched an investigation into sexual relationships between state correctionsemployees and inmates.

Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino said such relationships between officers and employees are dangerous.

“The inmates are potential victims of blackmail, coercion, as well as other illegal activities,” he said.

Officer Iran Colon faces the most serious charges, including rape, on the grounds that inmates cannot consent.

He is also accused of providing the phone.

Taconic head cook Garth Trail is also charged, as is Officer Melissa Hill, who worked at the Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining. All three have resigned.
