BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- An off-duty NYPD officer was seriously injured early Sunday in a crash on the Long Island Expressway.

The crash happened around 12:30 a.m. on the eastbound LIE in Brentwood.

Officer Anthony Robitaille had pulled off to the shoulder to talk to another motorist who may have been involved in an accident.

Both drivers left their vehicles when a third car, driven by Desirea Coyle, struck the rear of the officer's car which then hit the officer himself, police said.

Robitaille was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook with serious injuries. Coyle, of Highland Falls, New York, was taken to Northwell Health Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with minor injuries.
