NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police on Monday were looking for a man they said stabbed a deli customer before taking off in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

As 1010 WINS’ Al Jones reported, police said the random act of violence was triggered by something as ordinary as a cellphone conversation.

Shortly after noon Monday, the 38-year-old victim was talking on his cellphone where he passed a thrift store where the suspect was standing, police said.

The suspect overheard some of the the victim’s conversation and mistook it as a threat, police said. He yelled at the victim and words were exchanged.

Minutes later, the victim entered the New Cibao Deli and Grocery at 1076 Broadway, where the suspect followed him inside, plunged a knife into the man’s right shoulder blade, and ran from the store, police said.

The victim was taken to Kings County Hospital Center, where his condition was reported to be stable.

The suspect remained at large Monday afternoon. He was last seen running south on Malcolm X Boulevard near Broadway.
