Both Sides Make Final Case In Trial Of Nanny Accused Of Killing 2 Children

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Prosecutors and defense attorneys provided their closing arguments Monday in the trial of a nanny accused of stabbing two children to death on the Upper West Side in 2012.

As 1010 WINS’ Juliet Papa reported, prosecutors said Yoselyn Ortega plotted and planned the stabbings that killed Lucia “Lulu” Krim, 6, and her brother Leo, 2. Prosecutors said Ortega sought to get back to the Krims’ family apartment before their mother so that Marina Krim could come upon the horrific scene.

The mother did as the nanny allegedly tried to kill herself.

Defense attorney Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg told the jury that examining psychiatrists found Ortega to be deeply troubled.

“The people’s own psychologist, Dr. Ali Khadivi, admits that the defendant had a major mental disorder, which could potentially impair her functioning,” she said.

Van Leer-Greenberg said Ortega was unraveling and hearing voices days before the killings occurred.

Marina Krim discovered the bodies of her two kids in a bathtub with their eyes open. Lulu is said to have fought back and was stabbed 30 times.

Leo was also stabbed repeatedly.
