NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The TD Five Boro Bike Tour was under way Sunday, riding through 40 miles of car-free streets in New York City.

As 1010 WINS’ Roger Stern reported, the cyclists took off from Church and Franklin streets in Tribeca, and were passing along major roadways including the FDR Drive, the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, and the Queensboro and Verrazano-Narrows bridges.

Among the 32,000 participants was Amy from Norwood, the Bronx.

“You just see New York in a different way; different parts that we haven’t seen as well,” she said.

The course goes through all five boroughs. One Maplewood, New Jersey woman said it is a different way to see the city.

Road Closures

“Day to day, you come in from work, and you don’t even like pay attention to what’s around you. I think you actually get to take it in; take your time,” she said. “It’s not a race. I think that’s what I like about it most.”

Proceeds from the race go to Bike New York, which teaches bike skills to young people.
