JERSEY CITY (1010 WINS) – A newborn girl with her umbilical cord still attached was found dead in an abandoned home in Jersey City on Saturday—and her mother died at a hospital hours later, authorities said.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said its homicide unit and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating the death of the infant and woman at the home on Suburbia Court.

The girl was pronounced dead at the home around 6 a.m. The baby’s umbilical cord was still attached when she died, according to ABC7.

Authorities haven’t given any details about what may have led to the infant’s death. They later said a 41-year-old woman was found lifeless in the home and taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly before 5 p.m.

A neighbor told 1010 WINS that the home has been in bad shape since the owner died two years ago. Squatters have been living in it and the pool in the backyard is caving in, the she said.

The house is infested with  feces, maggots and drug needles, according to the neighbor, who said she believes it's under foreclosure.

“Criminal activity in and out, all day long,” she said.

The neighbor said she's contacted every city agency she could think of and that no one has done anything.

“Jersey City is aware that the house has been in squalor and that the house is dangerous and that there’s homeless drug addicts living there, and they’ve done nothing about it,” she said.
