Woman On Oxygen Dies After PSEG Cuts Power To Home

July 08, 2018 - 4:19 pm

NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A Newark woman died after PSEG turned off her electricity, which powered the oxygen tank that she relied on to breathe.

Linda Daniels, 68, had been under hospice care for congestive heart failure and was dependent upon her electrically-powered oxygen tank and air conditioning.

PSEG released a statement saying that Daniels had failed to pay her bills and did not return their attempts to contact her, forcing them to turn off power to her home.

When the electricity was cut and temperatures began to rise, Daniels used a backup oxygen tank until it ran out. Her children called an ambulance but Daniels died just six hours after losing power.

Sam Daniels, her son, says he had made a $500 payment towards his mother’s bill on July 3, but two days later, the company cut power to the home.

“They sent a total of three trucks here and none of them turned it on,” he explained.

Desiree Washington, Linda Daniels’ daughter, is now claiming that PSEG discriminates against black neighborhoods and spoke in anger towards the company saying: “You didn’t have the right to take my mom before her time.”

PSEG says they were unaware of a medical situation in the house.
