New York lawmakers hold pot legalization hearing ahead of 2019 session

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Legalizing recreational marijuana in New York is expected to be a hot topic when the state legislature reconvenes in Albany for the 2019 session.

In Manhattan, four assembly committees are holding a hearing on the matter.

The Albany County District Attorney testified that he is in favor of legalizing recreational marijuana, but he said Colorado has seen some unintended consequences.

"Because of the people who are making the derivatives, the waxes, the crystals, you have homes in suburban communities that are exploding," David Soares said.

Soares also cautioned that Cuban and Chinese gangs have infiltrated Colorado.

Karen Carlini of the Dynamic Youth Community, a drug treatment program said legalizing pot at the height of an opioid epidemic makes no sense.

"I don't think it makes sense to put another layer to this when it puts people at risk who are already suffering from addiction," she said.

Earlier this year, the state's Department of Health put out a report recommending legalization.
