New York Democrats Will Throw Support Behind Legal Marijuana, Report Says

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- There's word of another move towards legalizing marijuana in New York.

The New York Post reports, that state Democrats are planning to pass a resolution to endorse the idea at their nominating convention next week.

The move comes following calls for legal pot in New York from City Public Advocate Tish James, and gubernatorial candidate and former Sex And The City star Cynthia Nixon.

James She says arrests for possession disproportionately affect young people of color.

"And beyond being arrested for committing a relatively low level offense, these arrests follow young people throughout their lives," she said.

She's spoken to the governor's office, and said they'll work together to study the issue. It's one that she says offers wide economic opportunities in the state.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo had referred to pot as a 'gateway drug' but softened his stance after voters in Massachusetts approved marijuana for recreational use, and Gov. Phil Murphy began pushing for legalization in New Jersey.
