New York City Public Advocate Throws Support Behind Legal Marijuana

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- One of New York City's highest ranking elected officials is calling for a major change to a city drug law.

Public Advocate Letitia James is supporting the legalization of marijuana. She says arrests for possession disproportionately affect young people of color.

"And beyond being arrested for committing a relatively low level offense, these arrests follow young people throughout their lives," she said.

She's spoken to the governor's office, and said they'll work together to study the issue. It's one that she says offers wide economic opportunities in the state.

Asked if she has a personal history with marijuana, she said she did not.

"The answer is no, and I grew up, no, I'm a church girl, no," she said.
