New York boy wants kidneys for his mom for Christmas

PORT JERVIS, N.Y. (1010 WINS) – An Orange County boy is trying to help his mother get a kidney transplant for Christmas.

Jackie Winstedt has been patiently waiting for a new kidney, but it’s a three-to-five-year wait on the transplant list, so her 7-year-old son is hoping to push things forward.

“It makes me feel sad,” her son, Noah, told 1010 WINS.

Noah wrote a letter to Santa when they visited the local mall. He didn’t ask for toys – he asked for kidneys for his mom.

“I wrote it on the card. And then we put it in Santa’s mailbox, because I want my mom to stay healthy,” Noah said.

Jackie said she’s on dialysis but that as the kidney disease progresses, it’s less effective.

And she says the kidney from a live donor is better than from a deceased one.

“The kidneys last longer,” she said. “It’s less rejection.”

Jackie says she’s had kidney disease for 10 years, but that it’s recently gotten much worse.

It has left her with little energy, and she says Noah has noticed.

“I don’t want to play with him. We’re not going places as much as we did,” she said.

Noah didn’t stop with his letter to Santa.

“We put a sign at the bottom of the driveway,” he said.

The sign is decked out in Christmas decorations and reads: “Momy needs kidnees.”
