MINEOLA, NY (1010 WINS) -- Some kids on Long Island got an early Christmas gift on Friday, courtesy of the Nassau County Police Department.

Cops took kids from local homeless shelters out on a shopping spree.

"They go shopping, sometimes they'll take one of the cops with them and they'll walk around," Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said.

He said the cops like the kids to know they have a friendly side.

"We show up at bad times in people's lives, so today we showed up at a good time. The kids have a great time, and you know that's what it's all about. It's community policing on steroids," he said.

Kids like 9-year-old Arjenas have been thanking him.

"I think it's awesome that all the kids can have something for Christmas," he said.

He'll be building a brand new LEGO set over the holidays.
