Murphy calls on Trump to fund new Portal Bridge

TRENTON, NJ (1010 WINS) -- New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy held a press conference Tuesday morning with updates on the Gateway program.

With the century-old portal bridge in the background, Murphy renewed the call for federal funding for the Gateway project, but said first they must ensure trains can get to the new tunnels.

"When this bridge gets stuck as it all too often does, thousands of commuters get stuck, and commerce along the entire northeast corridor gets stuck with them," he said.

The governor says the project to replace the bridge is shovel ready, but the president is holding the money hostage.

Sen. Robert Menendez is hopeful that they can get it done through the current appropriations process.

"I can't get into all of the legislative language that we have worked on because I don't want to flag it and risk it, but I think that we will succeed," he said.
