NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Police are investigating the death of a 40-year-old mother who was apparently killed in her Bronx apartment with her young children present, and the woman's two adult daughters say she had an order of protection against her estranged husband.

Sources tell 1010 WINS that the woman's 5-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter alerted someone coming into their building that their mother was dead. That person called 911.

Officers responding to the call around 8 a.m. Sunday found the mom with puncture wounds to her head and neck, the sources said.

Investigators were seen coming in and out of the apartment building on East 187th Street, near Bathgate Avenue, in the Belmont/Little Italy section all day Sunday. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The mother's two adult daughters told 1010 WINS that their mom was estranged from her husband and had an order of protection against him. She was living in the apartment with her two younger children, whose father was the estranged husband.

The daughters say their mother told them her husband burned her in the eye with a cigarette just two weeks ago. They say she had several other domestic incidents with him.

The two suspect he was the last person to see their mom Saturday night.

The NYPD identified the mother as Luz Perez late Sunday.

Joshua Pemberton, who lives on the top floor of the three-story building, says the mom had just moved into the first-floor apartment with her kids a couple of months ago.

Pemberton says he didn't hear anything Saturday night but awoke on Sunday to find detectives scouring the area.

“It’s really shocking to hear,” he said. “There's a lot of little kids in the building.”
