NEW YORK (1010 WINS/AP) -- A military mother and her two toddler boys were found dead on Staten Island, and a person of interest -- believed to be the children's father, who is also in the Air Force -- is in custody, police and sources tell 1010 WINS.

The mom and kids were discovered around 10:30 a.m. Saturday, all in the same room of the home on Palisade Street, near Lily Pond Avenue in the Arrochar neighborhood, according to police.

At a news conference Saturday afternoon, police said the house was filled with smoke when they arrived and that the FDNY had to put out a small fire.

After the fire was extinguished, police discovered the bodies of the mother, reportedly 36-year-old Alla Ausheva, and the two boys, ages 2 and 3. The New York Post reports that police believe the two children may have been drowned in a bathtub.

Sources said police have taken a person of interest into custody and he's believed to be the father of the two boys. The Daily News identified him as 36-year-old Shane Walker, also a member of the military.

Police said he was found wandering on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in Bay Ridge at 7:48 a.m. and was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.

The area of Staten Island is said to be home to many military families. Video shows several people, said to be friends of the victim, wearing military garb at the scene.

The NYPD Homicide Squad was outside the house Saturday afternoon as neighbors gathered around crime scene tape put up by police.

The NYPD says the medical examiner's office will determine what killed the mom and two boys.

The horrific incident comes just a week after a woman and her 10-year-old daughter were killed at a Bronx home. A man believed to be the girl's father was taken to a hospital after apparently shooting himself.
