Melissa Mark-Viverito wants a 'worst workplaces for women' watchlist

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Listen up women: Melissa Mark-Viverito wants to highlight the worst workplaces for you in NYC.

The former council speaker and now public advocate candidate said Wednesday that if elected, she would introduce legislation that would put the "worst employers" on a watchlist.

Mark-Viverito tweeted, "Every woman knows the drill: A creepy comment. A passed-over promotion. A meeting filled with men who just won't stop talking over you. We all know what it's like to work somewhere that treats women terribly — now we're making this info public."

The criteria she'd use to determine who makes the list are:

1. Companies with substantiated sexual discrimination and/or harassment complaints and/or litigation.

2. Wage disparities for women.

3. A lack of diversity for executive-level and other staff members.

4. Inadequate family leave policies, according to new reporting requirements.

5. Substantiated complaints to public advocate's office on all gender-based discrimination.

Both private and public sector workplaces would be included, Mark-Viverito said.
