Manhattan Couple Says City Ticketed Them For Non-Existent Car

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Bob and Sandi Durrell of Manhattan said they've been receiving notices for unpaid parking tickets for eight months and they don't own a car.

They said they got rid of their vehicle 5 years ago, but the notices from the city's Department of Finance Parking Violations Bureau kept piling up, and they found it difficult to prove their innocence.

The couple enlisted the help of PIX 11, who stepped in to solve the problem.

The Department of Motor Vehicles said the Durrells properly turned in their license plates when they got rid of their car, but admitted sometimes the plates aren't destroyed as they should be, end up in the wrong hands, and are illegally placed on other vehicles.
