NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Most people grab a spoon when soup's on the menu -- cops say a homeless man in Midtown went for a knife instead.

The Daily news reports, Ruben Caballero, 48, got into a fight while waiting at the Central Synagogue soup kitchen on East 55th Street on Thursday.

A 54-year-old shelter resident tried to break it up, and Caballero begain to fight with him as well, police said. That's when Caballero allegedly plunged a knife into his back.

It took the man a while to realize he'd been stabbed, but medics eventually took him to Weill Cornell Medical Center in stable condition.

Cops say they picked up Caballero at St. Bartholomew's Church on East 50th Street.

The Daily News reports, Caballero has done three stints in state prison. He was reportedly paroled in 2012, after doing time for strangulation and weapon possesion.
