NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Suffolk County detectives are investigating an incident in which a man fired a handgun at an officer in Middle Island Monday night.

Officials say at approximately 8:20 p.m., a woman was driving a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder westbound on Middle Country Road when a 2020 Volvo sedan travelling southbound on Wellington Road struck the passenger side of her vehicle at the intersection.

Upon arrival, police say the driver of the Volvo fled the scene on foot prompting an officer to run after him.

During the chase the suspect fired a handgun at the officer and missed, officials say.

Police say the officer then returned fire and continued the pursuit.

The suspect remains at large.

The driver of the Nissan and a female passenger were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained in the crash.

An investigation remains ongoing.

Detectives urge anyone with information about the incident to contact the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
