NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Police are looking for a man who they say casually picked up a statue at a Brooklyn church and tossed it in a garbage can.

The NYPD released surveillance video of a man carrying the statue during the vandalism last Wednesday at Saint Thomas Aquinas Church on 9th Street in Park Slope.

Cops say the suspect went up to the statue of a saint, stared at it, then picked it up and threw it in the trash.

The statue was recovered but is damaged and currently being repaired.

Carla lives across the street. She says she’s disturbed by the incident.

“It makes me sad. They are so stupid,” she said. “What does it matter what color, race or religion you are? It doesn’t matter. It you don’t like somebody, don’t talk to them.”

Carla told 1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck that the man who smashed the statue should have to do community service for a year.

“Then he will see what kind of people live here or work here, whatever. He should do community service for the church,” she said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
