NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A man was shot and killed by police in New Rochelle on Friday night after he pulled a gun on an officer during a traffic stop, police said.

New Rochelle officers pulled the vehicle over near Potter Avenue and Pierce Street just before 11 p.m. for vehicle and traffic violations, police said.

After stopping the vehicle, police said a passenger got out and ran away on foot.

After a short pursuit, one of the officers fired his taser. During a struggle, the man pulled out a handgun, pointed it at one of the officers and attempted to fire, police said.

The officer discharged his firearm, striking the man once, according to police.

Officers rendered aid to the man, but he was pronounced dead while being taken by ambulance to an area hospital, police said.

He was later identified as 24-year-old Kamal Flowers of New Rochelle.

The incident is being investigated by the New Rochelle Police Department, Westchester County District Attorney’s Office and the New York State Office of the Attorney General.
