NEW YORK (AP) -- The mastermind of a botched kidnapping that led to the death of a Brooklyn landlord has been sentenced to 24 years to life in prison.

The New York Post reports that Erskine Felix was sentenced on Thursday in the accidental 2014 death of 39-year-old Menachem Stark.

Stark was pulled off the street and thrown into a van where he was bound with the help of Felix's brother, Kendall.

Prosecutors say the 40-year-old Felix sat on Stark, who eventually suffocated and died. The two then dumped his body in Great Neck, Long Island and set it on fire. They had hoped to hold the wealthy landlord for ransom.

Kendal was sentenced to 2 1/3 to 7 years in prison in March.

Felix's lawyer said his client continues to maintain his innocence.
