Man Dies In Police Custody After Being Apprehended In Harlem

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A man died in police custody early Sunday after being arrested in East Harlem, the NYPD said.

Police were called at 1:53 a.m. for an emotionally disturbed person in the building at 232 E. 116th St., the NYPD said.

Police told 1010 WINS the man was being restrained by his family when they put him in handcuffs. The man continued to act violent and was taken into the hallway, where he lost consciousness, police said.

Emergency medical technicians and the police Emergency Services Unit responded, and the man was taken to Metropolitan Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Police were told the man had been drinking tequila.

The man’s name was not immediately released.

The NYPD Force Investigation Division was investigating late Sunday.
