NEWARK, NJ (1010 WINS) -- Cops in Newark found a couple of guys with guns sitting in a pickup truck, and things went downhill from there.

It happened in the South Ward along Bergen Street near Lyons Ave; cops were investigating gun sales when officers surrounded the truck.

"They came across armed suspects in a vehicle, shots were fired, one suspect is in the hospital now, the other is DOA," Mayor Ras Baraka said.

A witness said police opened fire after the truck rammed another vehicle.

"I heard these guys say, 'pull up,' guns pointed, 'get out of the car now, hands up in the air," witness James Shaw said. "Next thing I know, I started hearing shots, sounded like hundreds of shots fired, and what I did was just duck as low as I could in my truck while all these shots were firing."

Shaw told NBC4 that he saw a man who had been shot laying on the ground.

"He was shot, blood everywhere, saying 'I need help, I need help,'" he said.

The Essex County Prosecutor is investigating.
