NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A vicious mugging in the Bronx left the victim in a coma, and now police have released video of the brutal beating in the hope of helping find the cruel attacker.

The 38-year-old victim was punched and kicked in the face and head repeatedly during the attack in University Heights on Sunday morning, horrific video released by the NYPD shows.

Witnesses say the victim had been drinking in front of the Food Universe at West 183rd Street before the attack and that he had dropped his wallet and was looking for it when he was approached by another man.

Police say the victim briefly spoke with his attacker before he was beaten over and over again.

The assailant stole the man’s headphones before taking off – but police say his mug was caught clearly on camera.

When deli worker Basheer Alabdi came out to call 911, he wasn't sure the victim was still alive.

"He looked like he was dead," the 19-year-old said. "He can't even talk. Can't even say nothing.

To make matters worse, Alabdi said the victim was lying on the ground for 15 minutes before anyone came to help him.

"Nobody called the cops, nobody called 911," he said. "Nothing."

The victim was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in critical condition with trauma to his head and neck. He was still in a coma Tuesday.

Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
