MONTCLAIR, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A man has been arrested and charged with the murder of a woman who authorities believe was his onetime girlfriend in Montclair, New Jersey.

Around 6 a.m. Friday, Akirah Townes, 20, was stabbed on Hartley Street in Montclair as she tried to leave on a trip to Virginia Beach, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s office.

Townes was pronounced dead at 6:42 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Paterson, prosecutors said.

Following an investigation, authorities charged Ahighah Broomes, 21, of Orange, with Townes’ murder. It appeared that Broomes and Townes were once in a relationship, prosecutors said.

Broomes turned himself in at Orange Police Headquarters while detectives were looking for him, prosecutors said.

Broomes was charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, prosecutors said. He will be held in the Essex County Correctional Facility pending an appearance in Essex County Central Judicial Processing Court.
