NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A woman was sleeping in her Washington Heights apartment when a man stormed in and tried to rape her, authorities say.

The incident occurred at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday at a building near Wadsworth Avenue and W. 189th Street.

The 43-year-old victim opened her door briefly, and the attacker slipped in and hid in the closet.

The dog starred barking, after which the man grabbed her by the throat and tried to tear off her clothes.

Her husband was out moving their car.

The woman’s adult daughter and younger son ran in, scaring the attacker away, police say.

“I don’t feel safe walking, not with at least my husband or some group of people. You know you  got to be careful, especially when you’re a girl,” said another resident of the building.

The suspect, who is betwen 5'8" and 6', was last seen wearing a black jacket, dark pants and a grey hooded sweatshirt.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
