NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A mother walking with her 4-year-old son was attacked and knocked unconscious during a robbery in Queens.

The 35-year-old woman was in the Woodhaven section of the borough at around 2 p.m. on Monday when an unidentified man ran up behind her and demanded she hand over her property, according to police.

The situation quickly got violent, police said, and the man punched the mother in the face, head, chest and back. She was knocked unconscious during the assault.

Investigators said the man fled down 84th Street with her purse as witnesses nearby gave chase.

Police are now hunting for the suspect who managed to escape by climbing to the roof of a nearby business.

He is described as a black male, 40 to 50 years old, 5’9” and 150 lbs. He was last seen wearing a black du-rag, dark colored long sleeved shirt, jeans and black backpack.

The woman was taken to a hospital to be treated for bruising and swelling to her face and body. The 4-year-old child was unharmed.
