NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The history of the magic behind the Harry Potter series and a little bit of the history on the books themselves is all on display in a new exhibit at the New York Historical Society.

'Harry Potter: A History of Magic' opens to the public on Friday, and 1010 WINS' Samantha Liebman was there for a sneak peak.

The galleries are organized by subjects taught at Hogwarts like alchemy, magical creatures, and charms.

With ancient artifacts and books, Alexander Lock curated the exhibit at the British library.

"The Harry Potter stories are very rich and full of real life magic, which JK Rowling certainly knew about. In the exhibition we have 15th century Italian manuscripts on how to uproot mandrakes," he said.

While Rowling incorporated these texts into the series, you can also see her own creativity through her handwritten notes and diagrams.

The New York Historical Society's Roberta Olsen said Rowling is also a talented artist.

"We have JK Rowling drawings, twenty of her drawings in which she conceived of the characters," she said.

The exhibit will run until January 27, 2019, at the New York Historical Society.
