Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks Show Is Preparing To Leave Crowds ‘Speechless’

June 29, 2018 - 9:20 am

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The 42nd annual Macy's 4th of July fireworks show is promising to be a high-flying, bombastic spectacular.

Though, the largest July 4th firework show in the nation can only happen after a team of 55 people make sure each and every one of the 75,000 shells are ready to go.

“There are shells that will go up and have eight different effects before they’re finished,” explained show designer Gary Souza.

Souza told 1010 WINS’ Glenn Shuck that spectators can expect to see astounding sights and to prepare for shells that will rapidly change colors.

One example of what viewers can expect to see is “a purple bouquet on the way up that turns into a green bouquet, climbs into a multiple color bouquet and then turns into a double-bursting palm tree.”

The show will consist of seven specially rigged barges with over 15 miles of wire. Kelly Clarkson is also set to perform a special rendition of “God Bless America,” and the West Point Band and Glee Club will provide a rousing patriotic score, which can be heard on 1010 WINS.

“What we try to do in the Macy’s show is take it beyond the ‘ooh’ and the ‘ah,’ Souza said. He explained the crew aims to leave the crowd “speechless.”
