CENTEREACH, NY (1010 WINS) -- Students say their driving instructor didn't seem to care much for the rules of the road, now he's under arrest.

The Long Island driver's ed teacher is facing charges for taking his students for a ride while intoxicated.

Russel Cohen, 58, was giving a lesson to four teens on Saturday morning, when the kids noticed he was acting weird.

“He was overly complementing us. He was just, he was acting really weird,” student Lila Mabanta told CBS2.

They made up a story that they were hungry and got him to pull into a McDonald's. Then they called the cops.

“I’m very, very thankful that they all thought to get out as soon as they saw that McDonald’s,” Lila’s mother Carla said. “And that they’re safe. That’s the most important thing. They weren’t taken, they’re all safe and they’re all here to talk about it.

Cops say Cohen drove off and rear-ended a car on Route 25. The driver of that car was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
