CORAM, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- A young Long Island boy was abducted by his father, and both were found dead in Virginia.

As 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported, many people are questioning the way the case was handled.

Suffolk County Police, Chief of Detectives Gerard Giagante insists the department took the case of 2-year-old Giovanni Ligurgo very seriously. He pointed out there was a suspicious fire at  John Ligurgo's home in Coram, Ligurgo and his son failed to return to Smithtown on Tuesday afternoon, and that a rifle was missing.

Suffolk Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart said her department requested that New York State Police issue an Amber alert, but that was turned down.

"The protocol is that we are presented with facts, we reach out to the New York State Police, we present those facts, and they make the determination whether it is going to fit the criteria for them to issue an Amber alert," she said.

Ligurgo had no criminal record, but he also had no job.
