LI woman killed in hit-and-run after van strikes her and drags her hundreds of yards

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A woman was killed Monday in a hit-and-run after she was struck by a van and dragged beneath the vehicle hundreds of yards down a street on Long Island in North Babylon, before her body became dislodged from the undercarriage,  police said. 

Police said the driver and the van were subsequently located. 

"Major Case Unit detectives are investigating a fatal hit and run that occurred this afternoon in North Babylon.  A van struck a male in the driveway of Commack Road and Route 231 by AutoZone at approximately 1:05 p.m.," the Suffolk County Police Department said in a statement. "A woman was also struck and dragged by the vehicle. The woman was transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries. The man was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries."

The North Babylon Volunteer Fire Company also said it responded to the scene. 

The investigation is ongoing.
