NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The New York Knicks gave head coach David Fizdale and assistant coach Keith Smart the boot Friday, the team announced.

The firings comes after the Knicks lost their eighth straight game Thursday night: a 129-92 defeat to the Denver Nuggets.

ESPN reported in November about murmurings of Fizdale's firing.

Assistant coach Mike Miller has been named the team's interim head coach.

Queens native and former Knicks player Metta World Peace tweeted that he would be up to replace Fizdale.

"If the @nyknicks is available, I definitely want to head coach there," he tweeted. "I will absolutely bring that street mentality to the garden. Red brick , hard nose , let’s get it popping. QB . This would be epic for all people like me. Straight from the jungles to win a title in NYC. Blaat
