NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Video has surfaced from 2017 showing Joe Biden telling the tale of the time he avoided a street fight with a razor-wielding gang called the Romans and their “bad dude” leader Corn Pop.

“Corn Pop was a bad dude and he ran a bunch of bad boys,” Biden says in the video, which made "Corn Pop" among the top trending phrases on Twitter Sunday.

The confrontation between lifeguard Biden and the gang happened back in the summer of 1962 at a predominantly black swimming pool in Wilmington, Delaware.

Biden says he kicked a local gang leader named Corn Pop out of the pool and referred to him as Esther Williams, the competitive swimmer and actress, after he violated the pool rules.

Biden says Corn Pop then told him, “I'll meet you outside.”

Biden says he armed himself with a “six-foot” chain and went outside to find Corn Pop waiting by his car “with three guys with straight razors.”

“And I looked at him, but I was smart then, I said first of all, I said when I tell you to get off the board you get off the board, and I’ll kick you out again, but I shouldn’t have called you Esther Williams, I apologize for that," Biden says.

He says his apology worked and he avoided a physical fight with Corn Pop and the gang.

“He said, 'Okay,' closed the straight razor, and my heart began to beat again,” Biden says in the video to laughter.

Many on social media, including Root senior writer Michael Harriot, were skeptical about Biden’s recollection of events.

According to the Washington Examiner, some of Biden's story has been corroborated by people who went to the pool back in the 1960s. Among them is former state NAACP President Richard “Mouse” Smith, who said Corn Pop was the leader of a gang called the Romans and that he did threaten to "cut" Biden but Biden “stood his ground."
